Dynamics ERP Upgrade Helps Life Science Manufacturer Hit Record Order Volume

With an outdated legacy system in place that was once considered the industry’s best, but was now lacking, A-dec knew it was time for a change.

Founded in 1964, the vertically integrated manufacturer sells products worldwide through a network of dealers. To continue to succeed in a changing market, the innovation-driven company needed to be able to meet the dental industry’s rapidly shifting business demands. They also wanted to improve the ordering experience for their dealers and the customers those dealers served, but their technology made it hard to address these challenges.

“From a technology perspective, we were flat on a legacy system. It absolutely needed to be upgraded,” said Yolanda Green, director of information services at A-dec.

A-dec chose Microsoft Dynamics for their ERP solution because of its flexibility. With implementation expertise from Armanino’s life sciences and manufacturing experts―a critical factor, according to A-dec order system administrator Jason Hopson―the new system was a success from the start. “On day one, we were taking an order, building an order and shipping an order,” said Hopson.

Dealers were able to use the new and improved functionality right out of the gate. “When we went live, they had very easy access to the new ordering system and there was a great adoption rate,” said Marv Nelson, chief operating officer. Even more important, the system enabled dealers to help their customers create customized product visualizations to showcase exactly what they were ordering.

Employees responded well to the change, said Hopson, because Dynamics is so intuitive and easy to use. In addition, the new system supports essential bar code scanning functionality that enables A-dec to maintain the high quality of its products and customer service.

The move to Dynamics quickly delivered tangible results. Just ten months after the go-live date, A-dec hit its highest ever volume of orders shipped. With ongoing support from Armanino, they’ll continue making gains. “What’s next for our team is continued stabilization of the system, figuring out how we can adapt our processes to the ERP,” said Nelson.

“One of the things that I would communicate to another manufacturer going through an implementation is that…you need to depend on partners to take you through this process,” Hopson added.
