Extend the Power of Your Planning Application
Posted by Noah Kluge
Planning applications, like Adaptive Insights, are central to generating a budget or forecast. General ledger systems are also critical as the source of actual financial results. These actuals are typically integrated into the planning system. The budget or forecast is then compared to the actuals within the planning application itself. The analysis of the actuals (e.g. what was purchased) is dependent on the dataset sent to Adaptive, which is typically limited to general ledger (G/L) financial dimensions, like cost center or department.

We’ve noticed that more clients are asking for subledger transaction detail within Adaptive — a reasonable and ostensibly simple request. After all, who wouldn’t want to see what was purchased, the purchase order, or item detail while analyzing a G/L account variance for their department!?
When you peel this back though, you can see the complexity in this request. You must have the G/L account (what the budget was set by) integrated with the subledger detail (e.g. vendor, item, Item category). This means data from many tables need to be pulled together into a common source, and that requires technical development by someone familiar with your ERP system.
Armanino has invested in a solution to address this very need for Dynamics AX, NAV and Dynamics 365 F&O. It’s designed to take the G/L and integrate in the sub-ledger to allow for a G/L account to be broken down by the desired subledger information. That way, department owners can answer their own follow-up questions immediately, rather than having to work with Finance to pull associated details from the ERP system. The end result: eliminated request cycles and wasted time!

We do recommend and implement Adaptive Insights for planning purposes. But this same solution will work with other technologies you may have, like TM1 or Hyperion to name just two.
