New Form I-9 for Employment Eligibility Verification
Posted by Mary DeStasi
- All employers must be aware that Form I-9 has been revised.Accounting Only the new version should be used as of January 22, 2017, for all new hires.
- Penalties can apply if you use the obsolete form.
- The form and the related instructions are at uscis.gov. It can be completed online.
- There is no change to the acceptable documents list and the retention requirements.
The revised Form I-9 is also easier to complete on a computer. Enhancements include drop-down lists and calendars for filling in dates, on-screen instructions for each field, easy access to the full instructions, and an option to clear the form and start over. When you print the completed form, a quick response (QR) code is automatically generated and can be read with most QR readers.
Additionally, as of January 1, 2017, employers with 10 or more employees are required by the Employment Development Department (EDD) to electronically submit returns, reports and payments. All remaining employers are required to electronically submit returns, reports and payments beginning January 1, 2018.
